MUSIC VIDEO STYLE

Our music video style is going to be Super 8 footage. We don't have a super 8 camera to achieve this effect however we have knowledge of how to add this effect post-production on final cut pro to our video. Even though the super 8 may make people think this but music video isn't meant to look like it was filmed a long time ago. We want to achieve the vintage affect but still make it modern. The idea came from Lana Del Rey's music videos. Considering everyone in my group is a fan of her she was on of the artists we looked into when we were looking at music videos and we all really liked her style.

MUSIC VIDEO

Our feedback sheets were very helpful and we decided to take on board what our peers said. One of the main things was that we didn't have a storyline in our music video and that it was just a lot of singing and dancing. Although that conveys our genre, we were told having a story line would make the video more interesting as the lyrics of our song are quite repetitive. So me and my group decided to get together and brainstorm ideas to see what we could come up with.

DIGIPAK PHOTO'S

I created a few rough quick digipaks just to show my idea that I drew which I posted earlier and printed them off because I wanted to see which one everyone liked better. I went round to everyone on my class and asked them to put a tally next to the one they like best and some even put kore than one. I did this because I had a range of styles that I really liked, however ultimately I can only have one which is why I did this. I decided that the most three tallied ones I would make again and then decide myself which one is my favourite when I make my final digipak.

KANYE WEST DIGIPAK AND POSTER ANALYSIS VIDEO

This is my digipak and poster analysis, I decided to do it on Kanye West.

SIMILAR ALBUM

This is 'Sunset Soul' by Ministry Of Sound. This album is the closest thing to our genre of music, that includes the track list and the album design. It consists of chilled grooves, tropical house and stripped back disco for long summer nights and parties. It has 60 soulful originals and remixes. The album perfectly complements the laid-back approach to summertime activities. Sunset Soul is also the album where me and my group got our song 'I Do' from.

TROPICAL HOUSE SONGS

These are some tropical house songs I found on soundcloud. I knew to look on soundcloud and not YouTube because soundcloud is where most teenagers and young adults listen to their music as there is a wide variety of songs available to listen to for free, including originals and remixes. Soundcloud is good to browse for songs of the house and tropical house genre.

TROPICAL HOUSE GENRE

Why is it called tropical house?

It was (initially) intended as a joke by its inventor, 20-year-old Australian producer Thomas Jack. Known also as 'trop house' (but not to be confused with house and dance hybrid, trouse. Obviously) tropical house is a sub-genre of house music. But where deep house and EDM use synthesisers and compressed mixes to create 'big room' sounds, tropical house employs horns, marimbas and steel drums and takes the tempo down a few beats per minute.

Who are the leading proponents of tropical house?

A slew of young producers are responsible for its lunge into the mainstream, many of which are based in Northern Europe and the Nordic countries. While Jack is credited as the founder of the movement and is supported by a roster that includes Klingande, LCAW, Autograf and Bakermat, the undisputed pioneer is Norway's Kygo (a hybrid of his given name, Kyree Gørvell-Dahll). A classically trained musician, who at only 23 has generated over 150 million plays on Soundcloud alone, Kygo has signed a deal with Ultra Records and Sony International that's rumoured to be gargantuan. He also spent summer 2014 playing four sold-out shows at four different venues over three days in New York City and was selected to replace Avicii for his headline slot at TomorrowWorld. Jack says, "at America festivals you've got Skrillex headlining and then you've got Kygo next to him…it's insane to see how it's all starting to merge into the wider scene".

What was tropical house's breakthrough moment?

The most recent surge in tropical house's popularity is largely thanks to one of its younger producers, 20-year-old Felix Jaehn. His saxophone-infused remix of OMI's "Cheerleader" brought tropical house into the iTunes and Spotify top ten in 18 and 14 countries respectively, reaching the top spot in Australia, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden.

ARTISTS NAME

Our artists name is Kyla, I came up with the name and suggested it to my group members and they all liked it a lot. I was looking into non well known house/tropical house songs and came across a name that was similar to Kyla (Klara) however I didn't want to copy the same name so I altered it slightly and came up with Kyla.

This name isn't popular as shown by this diagram which makes the name fit in perfectly with our genre as it's different, unusual and fresh. The name also relates to our genre as it's similar to 'Kygo', who is a male tropical house DJ.

ADORNO AND HORKHIEMER'S THEORY

Adorno and Horkheimer adopted one term 'culture industry' to argue that the way in which cultural items were produced was analogous to how other industries manufactured vast quantities of consumer goods. Adorno and Horkheimer then argued that the culture industry exhibited an 'assembly line character.' Which could be observed in the synthetic, planned method of turning out products.

Adorno and Horkheimer linked the idea of the culture industry to a model of 'mass culture' in which cultural production had become a routine, standardised repetitive operation that produced undemanding cultural commodities which in turn resulted in a type of consumption that was also standardised, distracted and passive. They came up with the idea of cultural elitists which are individuals that don't like anything mainstream and think it has no value. Adorno and Horkheimer's view is that they say to much rubbish on TV and music and there is no point of any of it.

ANALYSIS OF DIGIPAKS

                                      DIGIPAK ANALYSIS from EmilyCollins7

CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF A DIGIPAK

Front Cover - On the front of the album cover will include the artists name and the name of the album. The album cover will either have an illustration of some sort linking it with the artist or a picture of the artist/band. This album cover follows the codes and conventions as it has an image of the artist bold and clear in order for the artists target audience to know this is Rihannas album. The colours used are summery, due to it being released within the summer of last year and also the colours are girly again targeting her target audience of teenage girls.

Spine Of The Cover -  The spine of the cover includes the artists name and the name of the album in the same font as on the front of the album cover just smaller. It also shows the format of the disk inside of the album case. It will show a DVD logo and a serial code which would define it from every other CD.

Back Of The Cover - The back of the album cover will include a bar code which is the same with any CD. An parental explicit logo will also be on the back of the cover it could also be displayed on the front sometimes, this is if the language is inappropriate warning parents and people who buy that the language may be explicit for some people. It's used as a type of age restriction logo and will sometimes display what songs are explicit.

Inside Flaps - The inside will show three or two compartments displaying Images of the artist and using the same theme and colours at the front and back of the album cover or even illustrations. The first compartment will contain a booklet of more images of the artist again using the same colours, themes and illustrations. The booklet sometimes includes lyrics, the song titles, who wrote them, information and about the music company the artist belongs to. The middle compartment known as the second compartment is usually used to hold the disk which holds all the music. The disk will usually display the same colours and themes as the album cover may have the albums title on it and the artist name.

Sometimes the album can include a DVD which shows special features and extras about the artist and band.

MUSIC INDUSTRY CRISIS

For most of the 20th century record companies make money by selling a tangible product - a vinyl or a CD. You owned music by having a disc collection.

I don't think having CDs of that important unless you really like that artist. Buying off of iTunes is better as it's more portable and I want to listen to music everywhere I go without streaming it.

With the Internet The music industry has to adapt as CD sales are falling each year. The product is now bought online as a single song or album and exists only as an item on an iPod mobile phone or computer.  In 2009 95% of the music was downloaded illegally.

Music industry claimed victory in 2009 when 4 men behind the file sharing site Pirate Bay were ordered to pay 2.5 million in damage for helping users to illegally download films movies albums etc.

De-commodification - The CDs have lost their value and status. E.G - HMV had lots of store closures as they can't compete with iTunes.

JAY Z 99 PROBLEMS - APPLYING GOODWIN

The genre of this song is rap hip/hop. The genre denotates baggy clothing, 'bling', objectifying women, weapons, criminals, prison, black people, the ghetto, chains/fur coats, break dancing dog fighting and graffiti. The video has almost all of these conventions and it adheres to these conventions as it is set in an urban setting with images of graffiti on building walls. There is an image of women with enhanced bodily features which objectifies them. Jay Z wears baggy clothing and 'bling', he also makes a reference to a gun with a hand gesture. Jay Z gets shot at the end of the video connoting criminality. Race representations (the police officer and the lawyer are white and Jay Z is black) negatively show black people as criminals which also adheres to the conventions.
The lyrics and visuals have a synchronous relationship - they help to tell a story. An example of this is when the police officer pulls over the car Jay Z is in and this is said:
Police: Son, do you know why I pulled you over?
JayZ: Because I'm young and black and have my hat pulled low.
As JayZ says he has his hat pulled low, he pulls the hat further down his face.
Music and Visuals:
The pace of the cuts are synchronous with the beat of the song, which makes it aggressive and fast paced, which is typical of songs within the rap and hip hop genre.
